Luckily, my annual car inspection falls in August, so I can plan summer vacation knowing my automobile is in perfect working condition. I’ve found that having minor issues checked, correcting tire air pressure, or getting an oil change relieves travel anxiety for me and my husband.
Other things help as well: A few days before the trip, I get information regarding current road construction from an auto club, and thoroughly clean the inside of my car. We also have rental car information as a backup should anything go astray with our auto. Anything that won’t be needed is removed-not only to save space but to eliminate unnecessary weight that can waste fuel use. I make sure there are napkins, packaged cleaning cloths, pens, paper and emergency items. Maps, driving directions and guide books go in the driver door pockets, and paper/magazines/puzzles can go in the rear door pockets. A pillow and blanket is stowed in the back seat. Then, I try to pack items in the smallest, most flexible bags available, even if more are required. I won’t feel as organized, but they may fit better, and that's good enough for me!
The way I see it, when it comes to getting an auto travel-friendly, planning always helps. By anticipating limitations, panic-attacks can be avoided, and the trip can get off to a good start.
