In the past, the majority of mechanics that you would come across would be men. Those people in management positions at auto dealerships and repair shops would inevitably all be male. While it remains true that men dominate the automotive repair and service industry today, there are an increasing number of women who are entering - and excelling at - this field. This is due in part to changes in society regarding the perception of women's roles but it is due more to the changes that have occurred in the auto industry over time.
In the past, auto repair specifically required a lot of heavy lifting and demanded a lot of physical labor. Like it or not, many women just weren't capable of handling the heavy duty work of the job at the same rate as the men. As a result, they didn't do well in these jobs as a general rule.
However, the auto repair industry has changed as cars have changed. Repairs today require a lot more mental work and computer work than they used to and place less physical demand on the mechanics in the industry. This has equalized the playing field for women and made it possible for more females to not only enter the auto industry but also to do well in this area of business.
